Folklore is often seen as something from the past, preserved in museums or rural traditions. But is it really just a relic? This project explores Estonian folklore by incorporating shadows into the book through interactive pop-up pieces that reveal hidden details when a flashlight is used. The edge of the page stops limiting the story inside - the shadows creep over the paper and extend onto the wall, transforming the surrounding space into the realm of the myths.

The aim is to push the boundaries of illustration, showing how it can extend beyond the pages and take on an animated quality without the need for screens. Shadows were chosen to reflect the darker themes of Estonian folk tales, which often describe forests filled with spirits, devils, and wandering souls.

The book was designed, edited and bound by Regina Vitányi.
