Fog / Udu - A zine about Estonian folklore is a result of a multiple-year long research about the animistic beliefs in Estonia, a country where shared storytelling has formed unity throughout the centuries. At the intersection of shared mythology, ecology, and the rapid modernisation of Estonia’s cultural landscape, a fresh and new take on folk emerges; Fog / Udu serves as a guide when the line between past, present, reality and myth becomes obscure.

The content takes inspiration from folk stories such as the snake king: whoever finds the king of the snakes and consumes its crown will be able to speak the language of non-human beings. It is theorised that the concept of a snake with a crown comes from snakes consuming frogs, and the visual parallel between a frog's leg sticking out of a snake's mouth could have evoked the image of a crown, inspiring the legend. Contemporary Estonian language draws from folk beliefs actively, though which animistic concepts creep into everyday speech.

The zine was designed, edited and riso printed by Regina Vitányi.
